Francis Greenway (1777-1837) was transported to New South Wales for forgery. He later became the first government architect, working with Governor Lachlan Macquarie to construct many notable buildings. The Hyde Park Barracks initially housed convicts; later It served many functions. It is now a museum, and also houses a cafe. The Hyde Park Barracks are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Hyde Park Barracks is a truly impressive architectural fragment from Australia's convict past.
Fantastic interactive experience. Loved how I could do it at my own pace and the stories were interesting, informative and just the right length. As a descendant from a number of convicts, I found it very educational. I was also impressed with how the experiences and hardships of our First Nations Peoples was recognised and the horrible impact colonisation had on them. Thought provoking and very moving!
This is a really well done experience - I learned a lot about the history of the barracks, convicts and early Sydney. The audio set is a great idea - however to give a 10/10 could I suggest some subtle messages on the ground letting you know where to stand to hear the stories - sometimes I seemed to be on the edge of one and it would cut in and out and switch to another. I don’t think this needs to interfere with the design aesthetic if done well and would make a big difference to the visitor experience. Overall this was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the moving and conciliatory words from the indigenous elders at the end of the show.
